Croc Talk With Dan Carvalho
In this episode, I sit down with Dan Carvalho, Senior Reptile Keeper at St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park — This zoo houses more crocodilian species there anywhere else in the world.
Dan shares what it’s like to work closely with 25 of those species, how crocodilian care and research has evolved over the years, and what the process looks like when new species are split and described by taxonomists. We talk about Indian gharials, enclosure building, breeding behind the scenes, behavioral observations, and the responsibilities of working in such a high-profile zoo.
We also chat about Croc School, a hands-on training program for aspiring croc keepers, and Croc Fest, a major conservation fundraiser for crocodilian research and protection.
Whether you’re a crocodile keeper, a conservation nerd, or just a fan of these ancient giants, this one is packed with insights and stories from the front lines of croc care.
